Why Union?

Hundreds of your fellow employees at UMCP have come together in support of a principle--the same principle upon which the United States of America is founded: namely, that democracy is better than autocracy.

Over the past few months, Maryland’s decision makers have again passed the economic burden of current revenue shortfalls onto UMCP employees.

With a democratically structured employee organization, such as AFSCME Local 1072, the individual employee has a voice and is not subject to such arbitrary decisions. Only as part of an organized group do you have the economic strength that permits bargaining with the university on a basis approaching equality. You can join with us to help establish orderly procedures for determining hours of work, job descriptions, wages, health and retirement benefits, paid holidays, and vacations.

AFSCME Local 1072 represents UMCP employees as they seek to apply American democracy to their work life. The university works better when employees have a voice. Please join us.

Read the article from the Washington Post and then tell me why public employees--who are suported by tax dollars-- deserve to have it better than private sector employees.
